I am a Troll - Part Deux

Okay, see previous post for background.

I posted a *SARCASTIC* acceptance speech over there at the pottersues comm.

Minutes later, I get a PM from the pottersues Mod in my Inbox here, AND, a message is posted on the comm in reply to my speech.

I am beginning to actually be annoyed.

Someone who participates in the Firewisky posted a comment on the LJ entry where I featured your story, which in turn led me to eventually finding out that you had found out your story had been featured there. A few of the minions have in the past tried to write stories that they hoped myself or one of the previous Pottersues would have found their stories and they could have earned the highest rating of "Toxic". Since the purpose of your story is in fact written to be ridiculous, getting the Toxic rating would be a good thing. Which to be honest, it almost did.

The problem comes from the fact it was to obvious to myself and even the minions that you were doing it on purpose, which is what got you the troll rating. The best way to put it is, there is a difference between accidental spelling errors and errors tossed in intentionally. Nobody makes the spelling errors you made naturally. Now, I know that there is the rule about not using a Beta, spellcheck or even autocorrect. My point is that even without these things there are certain corrections a person will make simply by instinct even when they are drunk. Which means when you were writing you forced yourself to go against instinct.

I'll freely admit as will the minions that naturally occuring spelling errors are indeed funny. Myself and the minions also though have seen too many people trying to knock of My Immortal in many, many different fandoms, only to get caught by the fact we can tell they're spelling badly on purpose. Some of the stories we've found are lackluster without the forced spelling errors. Others don't just try to hard with their spelling mistakes, but the plot as well. You don't need the forced spelling errors to make your stories ridiculous, its ridiculous enough on its own merits.

On one side, you should be pleased with the fact one of the minions (I didn't find this one on my own) felt your story was ridiculous to share with the rest of us to enjoy because that seems to be the purpose of your story. We rarely if ever get stories written when the writer was in fact drunk or not thinking straight for some similar reason. On the flip side, you should also be annoyed that we felt you tried to hard in making the story badly spelled. I'm not going to say this is something that you need to work on because your later entries for the festival don't feel like you are trying to force drunken spelling errors. They feel a lot more natural.

AND, here is the comment the mod made:

Ahh, I just sent you a PM about this. You almost got a Toxic rating, but it felt like you were forcing the spelling errors rather then letting them come naturally. Now that I know that the point of the festival is to write the most ridiculous story I'm going to be forced though to give Troll ratings to any of the entries if a minion does in fact submit an entry though, if I end up featuring anymore. Thank a certain commenter for that. I would much rather have either come across the entries or have them sent them in and given them the rating they diserved. I would have brushed them off as the writer simply having a laps of judgement due to being drunk.

I just... I don't... I really don't give a shit, but I don't like someone saying I did something on purpose WHEN I DID NOT!

...and the idiocy continues, not to mention, yeah, you're being called a liar AND the mod seems to think it's supposed to be some honor to end up at that comm, so clearly that's what you were trying to accomplish. Seriously?

Love that there are spelling errors in her comments. Sober, one assumes. OR IS SHE FAKING?

Sober AND Serious. Srsly. LOL

From that comm:

apparently the point of Firewhiskey is to write the most ridiculous story possible and that means I'd have no choice but to give any Firewhiskey fanfic from here on out a troll rating because I now know its supposed to be the most ridiculous story possible

Honestly, from this it seems like she still doesn't get the point behind the firewhiskey fic challenge. People don't go into it thinking they'll come up with as many spelling errors and so on as possible - it's all about writing under the influence and going where that drunken muse leads you.

That she's pretty much calling every participant a liar (you weren't drunk, the mistakes and ridiculousness were intentional, etc.) is inexcusable, but I doubt you'll be able to wrangle an apology out of someone who truly doesn't understand the purpose of the community.

As irritating as it may be, I think you might have to chalk this one up to purposeful idiocy and leave it be. Alternatively, you can suggest that no firewhiskey fics be allowed/recc'd on the pottersues community, if she's truly coming from the point of view where she thinks all the authors of those fics are liars.

Yep. Yes. Yesss! To be called a liar is sticking in my craw.

Moving on!

No matter how you look at it, I would never accept as valid feedback from a writer as clueless as this Mod. She's clearly never seen a comma used properly and can't tell a homophone from a telephone. So how, then, is she qualified to determine what is and is not a "deliberate" error or what she deems "trying too hard"? Phuck them and the horses they rode in on, I say. ;) <3

LOL thanks, P - I feel much more betterer now! :-D

to the mysterious rules of drunk spelling.

LOL! I know I still struggle with these myself...it's a subtle art. Or is it an UNsubtle art? Not too subtly unsubtle?
Jan. 19th, 2013 04:26 pm (UTC)
A subtle art indeed, particularly if you don't want to look like you've FORCED it!

Or would that be FARCED it?

[...] you should be pleased with the fact one of the minions [...] felt your story was ridiculous to share with the rest of us to enjoy [...]

these people are...weird. i can understand griping about something in a fic that bothered you, but going out of your way to point and laugh at someone is, as rzzmg said, plain ol' bullying.

eh. joke's on them, anyway. you wrote this for YOUR fun, and if they can't appreciate that, who cares? :D here's a cyber trophy for your super cool acceptance speech:

YES! This is what I was REALLY gunning for! Thank you, mizsphinx! *sniff weep sob*

.... this isn't a Portkey, is it?

Oooh, Thumbs UP. I really like this.

"Nobody makes the spelling errors you made naturally." - Gosh, Ook, you drunked wrong!

See, there are certain standards you need to meet when getting trashed, disabling all the editing functions in the word processing program of your choice, and writing fanfiction. Clearly, you've ignored these quite obvious and set-in-stone guidelines that *all* drunk writers have found at the bottom of the bottle and memorized as well as their blitzed brains are able.

The solution?

More firewhiskey fics. Naturally. ;)

(And did you ever know that you're my heeeero?)

(Also, re: Mod's comma use, or lack thereof - Srsly? SRSLY??)

I drunked wrong? Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! LOL

Dang it. I wondered just where it had gone a-foul.

I love you. :-D

What ridiculousness. On the upside, you and FWF have a bevy of supporters on the comment site. :-)

Speaking of--I think I'd like to participate tonight. How does one sign up (and how does one disable the backspace key?)
Jan. 25th, 2013 03:37 pm (UTC)
We'd LOVE to have you join us!

Here is the community: http://firewhiskeyfic.livejournal.com/

Join or Watch the community, so you receive its notifications, and at 6:00, I'll put up the "Let's Get This Party Started" post to start off tonight's festivities. :) That's all you need to do - no sign-ups required.

As for disabling backspace key - I got this from the NaNoWriMo site:

1. From the Tools menu, select Customize…
2. In the
Customize dialog box, click Keyboard
3. The Customize Keyboard dialog box will open
4. In the scroll box beneath the Categories label, select All Commands
5. In the Commands scroll box, find the command name for the key or keystroke (you’ll have to do some searching)
6. Highlight the key or key sequence in the box below the Current keys label
7. In the drop down box beside the label Save changes in: select Normal to apply the change to all documents created in Word. To disable the key only to the current document, select the document name from the list
8. Click Remove and then Close
9. Click Close on the Customize dialog box

REALLY hard to fix instinctive corrections without backspace I have found.

Honey, life's just too short....my response would be: fornicate 'em if they can't take a joke. Don't let the illegitimates get you down. ;)
